This essay offers seven pieces with jagged edges of the author’s research on Muslim efforts against sexual violence. They are held together by a central argument: work on/against sexual violence is messy. Each piece takes a specific research moment, an organization or a theme as occasion for analysis and reflection. It explores the work of several Muslim organizations and projects – including HEART to Grow – and draws on the open-access volume Sexual Violence in Muslim Communities, coedited by the author and Samah Choudhury. The essay traces how Islam is referenced in Muslim advocacy work, and how the author’s own religious and ethical commitments inform their involvement in that work. The themes, ideas, and issues that run across the pieces include silence, survivors, solidarity, anti-Muslim hostility, Islam, feminism and patriarchy, and funding. The essay also does SV awareness work by offering information, analysis, methodological reflections, and ethical challenges
