The system of color terms in the Wadu variety of Pumi (Tibeto-Burman, China), whose structure and semantics are investigated in this article, includes a composite red/grue term, something that has not been attested in any language before and poses a theoretical problem for the neuropsychological account of color categories. However, dialectal comparison shows that the single red/grue term results from sound change and phonetic conflation of terms. Moreover, speakers have found ways to differentiate red from grue in daily use, thus corroborating the opponent-process theory of color
