After eleven years of excavation and study, the active clearance of the Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone at Cyrene has been temporarily halted in order to permit the publication of its middle grounds. The following report summarizes certain aspects of the work, concentrating on three topics. The first is the sanctuary's architectural growth from a rudimentary polygonal peribolos, first erected around 600 B. C. and later containing one or more modest sacred houses, to a fully evolved Hellenistic/Roman terraced hillside precinct. The second is the specific identification of the Wadi Bel Gadir grounds as a sanctuary consecrated to Demeter and Persephone; the extent to which the cult evolves during the course of its prolonged local history is discussed. The third focuses on the problems of determining both the precise beginning as well as the end of ritual activity within the sanctuary grounds
