Rent Values and Landlords in Cambrai in the Middle of the XVIIIth Century. Thanks to the landlords' tax-return files, one can analyze housing rents in two parishes of Cambrai in 1750, Saint George's and La Madeleine. In spite of fairly low rent values, the Cambrai urban area looks like a "Monopoly" grid with its socially marked streets. The scale of rents depends on three major factors : the condition of the houses, the mode of occupation and the strategies developed to ensure ownership. Built-up property, which provided only meagre returns at best to their owners, did not benefit from the "rassembleurs" like land did. Relatively abandoned by the nobility, the market of rented houses was dominated by smaller landlords, of bourgeois origins, and by the little world of craftsmen
