Cet article s'inscrit dans un projet plus large qui entreprend l'examen des configurations locales de la modernite, telles qu 'elles apparaissent dans plusieurs types de discours intervenant dans le modelage de la subjectivite des basses castes du Tamil Nadu rural. L'interet porte par l'A. a la comprehension de la configuration changeante des formations discursives l'a amene a etudier le role pivot des intellectuels. Il explore les tensions presentes dans le discours reformiste du clerge dans une communaute de pecheurs cotiers du district de Kanyakumari. Il suggere egalement comment les intellectuels chretiens ont pu etre percu comme cruciaux dans la constitution des discours - tels que ceux sur la modernisation et la reforme sociale. Dans une perspective gramscienne, le clerge peut etre considere comme intellectuels traditionnels et les autres reseaux d'intellectuels (enseignants, medecins, infirmiers, travailleurs sociaux, fonctionnaires des partis politiques, etc.) peuvent etre regroupes sous la categorie intellectuels d'etat. Les idees de Gramsci sur les relations entre ces deux categories d'intellectuels sont utilisees par l'A. dans sa reconsideration de ces categories tout au long de l'article
