Man-land relationships and socio-economic development in Africa are frustrated by the effects of the following conditions: i) the traumatism of the peasant; in the course of the last 400 years since he has been isolated from the larger society, and feels inferior; 2) the behaviour of strangers, who have disregarded the dignity of the human being in the rural world; 3) the tendency of the greater part of the intellectual African elite to orient themselves to the cities, and in particular to the capital; 4) the fundamental shortcomings of the material infrastructure which the new nations have inherited from the colonisation period. The largest part of the paper deals with the fourth point. Due to the absence of good secondary and tertiary roads, and to the fact that the large cities as gateways to Europe are situated at the periphery of the service areas instead of the centre, the rural areas remain isolated from the urban world. A relocation of the trade centres may be the most efficient way to arrive at a faster rate of socioeconomic development of the rural areas.
