data on which this paper is based were collected in 1958. niumeographed report was written in '1959, by which time I had gone abroad, where I was to stay until 1965. Involved in other matters, and far away from the renewed urgency of the problems with which the paper deals, I did not turn my hand to it till now, (1966), when I again am in direct contact with a situation which has exploded. Without access to the original data, I have debated whether the paper as it stands, without engaging in further analysis, would still merit publication. We cautioned the reader that this was a small city with a relatively stable Negro population, that a number of whites had been lost to the sample, and that no inferences could be drawn with regard to middle-class youth
