One can observe in the German reception of the Formes élémentaires a sort of surprising "disciplinary misunderstanding": Durkheim had the ambition to propose a general sociological explanation of religious phenomena; most of his German readers seem to consider his book as a monograph on the rituals of certain Australian tribes. While in France, the book turned Durkheim into the founder of the French school of religious sociology, in Germany, the main sociologists of religion seem to ignore it; the only ones who show an interest in it belong to the fields of the history of religions, theology or ethnology. This "misunderstanding" will have consequences in the reception, emphasizing certain aspects of the book, mainly the issue of totemism, at the expense of more general questions
