A dedication seen by Pausanias (1.27.9-10) near the Erechtheion, set up by the Marathonians to commemorate Theseus's capture of the Bull of Marathon, is here reconsidered and a new reconstruction proposed. Instead of a two-figure group of Theseus and the Bull, as previously assumed, the monument was originally more likely a bronze bull standing alone, a popular form of dedication in Greek sanctuaries, recorded frequently by Pausanias. Judging from reflections in vase-painting, the first dedication should have been made at the end of the sixth century B. C. and probably did not survive the Persian sack of 480. The replacement seen by Pausanias may be identified with a fragmentary torso and muzzle found in the Greek excavations of the Akropolis in the last century
