In this essay I trace the complex and often contradictory relationship between César Chávez and the various sectors of the Chicano movement during the crucial period of the American war in Vietnam. In order to understand both Chávez's own self-representationsand the multiple ways in which he was constructed through artistic and political practices, I draw upon a wide range of discursive and ideological elements taken from the movement archive. I conclude with some brief remarks on contemporary images of Chávez and the diverse political agendas they might serve
