The thrust of this sarcastic sketch was aimed in part at Brecht's disappointments associated with the June 1953 workers' strikes in East Berlin against the government policies of forced socialization.2 It also reflects Brecht's exasperation at the occasionally bitter dispute concerning the role of his theatre practice in Socialist Realism and the attendant suspicion that he was a formalist in disguise.3
