La legislation de Westminster sur le divorce de 1857 ne fut pas etendue a l'Irlande, farouchement hostile a toute autorisation du divorce. Mais, en fait, la separation de corps etait tres repandue : le mari renvoyait sa femme chez ses parents| ou chacun des epoux continuait a habiter chez ses parents| la Famine poussa a l'emigration en Amerique de nombreux maris, qui abandonnerent femme et enfants. Quand l'Etat libre d'Irlande fut instaure, la hierarchie catholique pesa de tout son poids pour que de timides projets de loi en faveur du divorce ne soient pas discutes
