This practice note critically examines Brazil’s ongoing educational reform known as the New High School (Novo Ensino Médio), particularly from the perspective of Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy. Using documentary analysis, I explore how structural inequalities and increasing involvement from private foundations may undermine the intended objectives of the reform. By situating the New High School in broader debates on democratisation, student agency, and equity, this discussion highlights key challenges and suggests pathways towards a more inclusive implementation
