With the analysis of early medieval uses of money, I pursue three goals. First, by explaining selected source excerpts, I proof the diversity of the silver penny’s use. Secondly, I develop first a general, then a concrete picture of coin-thinking, -handling and -usage in the contemporary social system. Semantic peculiarities of coin language and the functional metamorphoses of coin movements are presented in detail. Thirdly, I draw conclusions about the main functions of coin usage, its social meaning and benefits. This results in a new picture of coins in the field of action of peasant coin-tax-obligation, manorial silver accumulation and -expenditure and coin-operated market life. Coin usage turns out to be ideologically omnipresent, yet partically limited and socially asymmetric
