The Chinese Buddhists believed in the immortality of the spirit and Emperor Wu wrote an essay to defend this thesis against the Confucian critics. He solved the contradiction that existed between a doctrine of an eternal spirit and a doctrine of the impermanence of all things by utilizing the Taoist concept of substance and function ('i-yung). The spirit, in substance, is passive and unchanging, but in function as consciousness (shih), it is active and mutable. He also suggested a yin-yang relationship between ignorance (wu-ming), and knowledge (ming), or spirit (shen-ming). In this, he anticipated a theory of Mind Only (wei-hsin), that crystallized later in Hua-yen's understanding of the text, Awakening of Faith in Mahayana
