The present article represents part of a larger project-an analysis of the relationships that obtain between male homoerotic discourses and the androcentric ideologies of the cultures in which these discourses operate.' Throughout history, for various reasons, male homoerotic practices have been supportive of, rather than subversive to, hegemonic conceptions of masculinity. Even in the postmodern, late capitalist societies of the twentieth century, male homoerotic discourses are often reinscribed within the very patriarchy they would seem to countermand.2 It is crucial to the current reconceptualizations of gender, sexuality, and their representations that the dynamics involved in the processes of this reinscription are scrutinized and elaborated
