The chronology of the later Early Bronze Age in Greece has been the subject of debate for several years. The recent excavations at Tiryns have produced evidence for a phase labeled by the excavators as an Übergangs-horizont, or transitional phase, between EB 2 and EB 3. The Tiryns excavators argue that the traditional sequence for the later Early Bronze Age, based upon the stratigraphy at Lerna, is missing this transitional phase. Supporters of the traditional sequence point out the lack of true transitional pieces at Tiryns; rather, every piece published so far from Tiryns can be associated with either Early Helladic II or Early Helladic III types which are stratigraphically distinct at Lerna and elsewhere. The deposits from House R at Asine and the "fill over the floor" of Megaron/House A at Berbati have been cited as support for the transitional phase. In this paper I review critically the deposits and stratigraphy from Asine and Berbati, and conclude that the evidence from these two sites cannot be used to support either side in the debate
