This article examines the role of the village administrator in an Israeli cooperative village settled by Jewish immigrants. It focusses on his involvement in three sets of relationships: - (1) with the Land Settlement Department of the Jewish Agency which establishes and administers new villages, (2) with the political party to which the village is affiliated, and (3) with the villagers themselves. These sets of relationships impose conflicting pressures on administrators many of whom do Jiot complete their term of office. In this article I analyse the ways in which this particular administrator has coped with the problems inherent in his position and I argue that any analysis of that position must include an examination of the totality of his roles, particularly those that may appear peripheral to the performance of his official duties.RésuméDans cet article on étudie le rôle de ľadministrateur ?un village coopératif israëlien habité par des immigrants juifs.
