Sustainable development has been characterised in this series of essays to which this short piece is the conclusion, as an odyssey into desirable wealth creation, stewardship of ecosystems and people, community empowerment and revelation through visions sharing a common purpose. The key is to coordinate institutional innovation so that all these strategies can be built upon. To do this will require much more effective political leadership than is presently the case, even more mobilisation at the Local Agenda 21 level, a lot of action by business, and real progress on the eco‐taxation, indicators and auditing fronts. It is all going to be hard pounding
