Sue Bullock, as she was known to the founding editors of HWJ, was the Journal’s first business manager. In 1975 we had taken the decision to self-publish; our printers were Titus Wilson of Kendal, and Sue’s calm grasp of finance and what would now be called project management made her an invaluable as well as a much-loved member of the editorial collective. Her initial connection with the History Workshop movement was through Ruskin, where her partner Alan Leather was taught by Raphael Samuel. However, for Sue, as for Alan, the focus of life and work was ultimately to be the developing world. After her degree in European Studies at Sussex, Sue had qualified in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and, under the auspices of Voluntary Service Overseas, travelled to Laos. There she worked for two years in a teacher-training college and co-produced a national curriculum for English. Back in Britain, she headed the small NGO Returned Volunteer Action, and continued consultancy work on development projects alongside work for HWJ and the Centre for Social History at Ruskin.
