L'A. se propose de donner une image plus complete et detaillee de la guerre de 1977 entre la Somalie et l'Ethiopie a partir de l'exploitation de sources documentaires ethiopiennes non utilisees jusqu'a present, d'une part des documents officiels recemment declasses, d'autre part des sources orales qui confirment et completent largement les informations officielles. L'A. demontre notamment que meme si les Somalis ont pu prendre l'initiative en raison d'une bonne utilisation de leurs forces mecanisees, ils n'ont pas pu atteindre leurs objectifs pour deux raisons. D'une part, malgre l'importance de l'arsenal militaire sovietique, le commandement et le systeme de logistique etaient inadaptes. D'autre part, les Ethiopiens ont su exploiter ces defaillances et leur superiorite numerique pour s'imposer. Cependant, ce furent essentiellement des interventions exterieures, notamment l'assistance cubaine et sovietique, qui ont ont permis la victoire de l'Ethiopie
