The interpretation of Aristophanes’ Assemblywomen proposed here analysises the workings of the mimesis by which women dress up as men . Aristophanes plays on the contrast between the Athenian nomos which excluded from the Assembly anyone whose physis did not conform to that of the Athenian citizen, and the topos according to which the boundary between male and female physis was blurred, because of the moral decadence of certain men, especially the brilliant young orators who were prominent in public life. By this theatrical play with political codes, women try to imitate old men but indeed look like these young men:this undermines not only their political project but also the image of the democratic assembly. Women thus become housewives again. The whole process however belongs less to a serious reflection on the city, than to the play and the conventions of comic drama
