Study of the sources for nineteenth-century radicalism can turn up unlikely connections. The sixteen volumes of the political and religious radical John ‘Zion ’ Ward (1781–1837) contain many letters to the Bradleys of Birming-ham, the family of the two poets who published jointly as ‘Michael Field’
