Michel Delon: Joseph Vernet and Diderot in the Storm. From one Salon to the next, Diderot devoted more and more space to the storms painted by Joseph Vernet, which allowed him to investigate the philosophical problems of the disorder of nature and the relationship to others' suffering. He gradually became more involved in his descriptions, culminating in the intimate dream of 1767. The great artist becomes the one who can provide a meaning for the absurd. The shipwreck thus appears as a test of human solidarity and as a confrontation with the terrifying forces which defy our understanding. The story of Vernet tied to a mast in order to study better the fury of nature illustrates the mastery of a genius, who can find within himself those resources which are traditionally sought in religious faith
