Estimates of the age of women at completion of childbearing have been prepared on the basis of a special cross-tabulation of data from the 1954 census of Australia. Two assumptions are involved: (1) No children are born to women 45 years of age or over; and (2) A mother has completed her childbearing if she has not borne an additional child for some specified period of time. For the country as a whole, about a quarter of all mothers had borne their last child before reaching age 29; about half by the age of 34; three-quarters by the age of 38; and nine-tenths by the age of 40. There is a consistent religious differential and a consistent rural-urban differential within each religious grouping, with the differential by residence exceeding that by religion. Catholic mothers complete childbearing at a later age than non-Catholic; Rural mothers at a later age than Metropolitan or Other Urban. These differentials are found to be due solely to differences to fertility. They would be even larger if there were no group differences in timing of first birth or in average interval between successive births
