Les patriarches ont vu l'apogee de leur autorite patronale et de leur pouvoir institutionnel a la fin du 4e siecle. La diaspora a joue un role crucial dans ce processus. Grâce a leur role d'intermediaire pour les communautes de la diaspora, les patriarches ont acquis de la richesse et une clientele juive de premier plan. Ces facteurs mettent en valeur le prestige des patriarches aupres des juifs palestiniens. L'influence patriarchale semble avoir ete plus importante dans la diaspora que parmi les juifs palestiniens. Elle a surement agit comme une force d'integration, reliant les communautes de la diaspora a la Palestine comme jamais auparavant
