In the course of current research in the area of strengths (Otto, 1975a; 1975b) a series of marriage and communication games (Otto, 1974;1975a) were field tested. During this work an unusually large number of incidents involving value conflict behavior between relatives at the time of a division of an estate or during monetary dealings with each other came to my attention. After listening to a series of such cases a pattern became noticeable. As more samples were collected, there emerged the outlines of a unique phenomenon with a very distinct set of characteristics which I have called the value incident. The label family value was selected for this phenomenon because the quality of a fugue is evident. The state, a common term used In psychopathology, refers to an unhealthy state resulting from a number of factors which converge to have a common effect. The complexity of a state is compounded by the fact that the individual affected usually is not aware of the existance of these factors or of the increased effect resulting from the combination of factors.
