IN AMERICAN LITERATURE, THE INTERACTION between culture, motion and narrative is nowhere more apparent than in writings of contemporary Native Americans. The reasons are deceptively simple, and suggest a number of intriguing, complex associations between fiction and autobiography, community and individual, art and life, people and place. authors employ, in various ways and to varying degrees, ancient verbal literary traditions that reflect long-standing associations with specific landscapes. As in native verbal art, written often emphasizes singular qualities of motion in actions of individuals or groups in specific real-world places and primal situations; action development is tantamount to character development. It is this emphasisthe preponderance of minute, detailed descriptions of motion in relation to setting-that is so apparent in writings by American Indians. In fact, as Geary Hobson notes, when non-tribal people attempt to write Indian books or understand native ways, they often overlook importance of the everyday occurrences, prosaic and undramatic elements of small things conducted in almost unnoticeable ritual... (Rise of White Shaman, p. 103). Native writers emphasize this ritual for us, because it is their domain, their donnee, and it is immensely provocative
