Work and leisure are both notions belonging to the same type in the authoritative texts of Capucines friars. Their function is to avoid idleness, which represents the worst danger for individual salvation. Actually, the whole religious life is arranged around individual as well as communal exercises; these are the heart of a sociability filled with hierarchy and equality. The community body takes its shape around them. One can read the history of the evolutions of the order according to the articulation of these very notions As far back as the XVIIth century a potential conflict appears between poverty and rationalisation of the way of life. All the more, the assignment of work of the sole lay-brother in the XVIIIth century indicates a rupture within the community body: the meaning of exercises is being lost, giving way to the quest of quietude if not idleness
