A socio-psychological model of bilingual development. After a recollection of the successive models of bilingualism: additive and subtractive bilingualism (Lambert), semilingualism (Skutnabb-Kangas), contextualisation and literacy (Cummins) and Hammers' and Blanc's psychosocial model, the author studies the socio-cognitive factors that such a model has to integrate in order to give a satisfying representation of bilingual development. The author examines in succession the socio-semiotic functions, contextualized and decontextualized language, and the factors of acquisition of differentiated social use
