Abstract This study about the historical paths of the devotion to Santa Rita de Cassia, in the form in which it is lived in Santa Cruz (Rio Grande do Norte), considers two principal aspects: the first refers to the socio-religious manifestation, which confers sense and sacredness to the space of the Sanctuary and keeps in mind the fact that the devotion to Saint Rita is present since the very beginning of the city; the second refers to the direct impact caused by the Sanctuary on various levels, as for example the economic, social and political, among others. So, and because of this, we examine the perspective of the creators and the strategies used for the concretization of that construction, as well as the repercussion caused in the city. To this end, we used the historical-critical method, with the intention of producing a non-confessional and therefore non-apologetic history of the church, postulating a rigorous critical analysis of the documentation and a radical historization of the sources of the religious matrix. The analysis turned into effect about the chosen thematic, also touches the notion of identity, constantly rebuilt by the clergy, the local population and the devoted pilgrims. To this end, we adopted Hall’s (2006) perspective about identity, which is understood as a construction accomplished within the discourse: “the identities are produced on historical locations and in specific institutional frameworks, with specific strategies and initiatives” (p. 109). Furthermore, we also used the concept of symbolic exchanges, as used by Bourdieu, visualized in the relationship and the devotional practices which intermediate the ways of living together established between the pilgrims and the Saint, since they are making offerings and expect gifts of her.
