IN northern Arizona two hundred or more recent cinder cones surround the San Francisco Peaks. Among these cones none is as striking as Sunset Crater (Fig. I). Rising above an aweinspiring flow of fresh-looking lava, its ruddy rim glows as in the rays of a perpetually setting sun. So interesting are its surroundings and so remarkable its scenery that, in I930, it was proclaimed a National Monument. But Sunset Crater is distinguished in other ways. It is the most recent vent of the volcanic field in which it lies.' In I930 the archeological expedition of the Museum of Northern Arizona discovered the dwellings of an ancient people of pueblo culture buried under its ash. Thus a method is afforded by which the eruption may be dated. Moreover, it is clear that the outburst played a leading r6le in the economic development of the region in a certain period of prehistoric times
