This study is concerned with the changes in seasonal migration in Japan since World War II. The author suggests that seasonal migration is a response to major economic and social changes induced in rural Japan by the integration of agricultural households and rural areas into the industrial economy. This migration involves the flow of surplus labor from rural areas to regions with employment opportunities. Regional variations in seasonal migration patterns are considered and the socioeconomic characteristics of migrants are described. (ANNOTATION
