One of Ireland’s leading playwrights, Marina Carr has emerged since the mid-1990s as a theatrical force of nature. Her work artfully blends the contemporary and the classic, the mythic and the real, frequently revisiting the tragedies of Shakespeare and ancient Greece and subverting their central premises in order to interrogate themes of family dysfunction, self-destruction, and redemption. Carr’s work exhibits lyricism of language and emotional complexity on an epic scale, infuses tragedy with comedy, and coalesces realms of human and spiritual existence, while remaining simultaneously grounded in the modern world of the present moment
