The paper represents an attempt to assess differences in fertility for the four ethnic groups in geographical sub-divisions of the country in 1911 and 1936 and the changes that occurred between these two dates. In the absence of adequate vital statistics census data are used to calculate replacement rates. Effective fertility rates and net reproduction ratios for the provinces, rural and urban areas, principal cities and magisterial districts for the European, Bantu, Coloured and Asiatic population are analysed and correlated with other social factors affecting fertility
