Territorial structures and urban network are intricately and multifariously intertwined. This article is an attempt at surveying the interference between territorial reality and urban relays in the case of a small territory in the northwest of Germany. Through a comparison with a matrix of urban functions, it shows that the Lippe County displays some fundamental irregularities affecting both the production and the trading sectors. Although the territory is relatively highly urbanised, the urban network assumes mostly cultural and secundary functions while integrating itself rather closely within the hierarchically higher ranking level of the region at large, the Lippe County presenting itself quite intentionaly as an open territory at the borders of which commercial currents are hardly disturbed
