A Zapotec community from the Valle Central of Oaxaca, Mexico, has recently employed video technology as a tool to disseminate knowledge about local projects of economic development and to foster cultural awareness among community members. A study drawing on the literature on the sociopolitical relevance of community video making in the context of the globalization of cultures sheds light on the way traditional practices, pedagogical values, and local notions of time and place inform the Zapotec documentary Ben rguil guialznak/Buscando bienestar/Searching for Wellbeing. This video shows that the accommodation of different cultural contributions continues to be a strategy of survival for indigenous peoples.
