Slag debris of ancient metalurgical activities in the South of the Iberian Peninsula show various aspects due to different technologies and to technological developement. Silver and copper smelting has been prooved on the so called Pyrite Belt and iron technology has been postulated. Changes in the bulk composition can be attributed to technolocial evolution, including slag recycling. Due to the presence of phases and phase associations typical for the copper-lead-silver smelting process, large scale iron production seems to be excluded at Aljustrel (Portugal), Sâo Domingos (Portugal) and Rio Tinto (Spain). On the other hand, large scale iron technology of the same period can be prooved near suitable iron ore occurences, i.e. in the Sierra Morena, partially side by side with copper technology
