A qualitative and quantitative analysis of 14 coins of the Gades Punic series issued between the third century and the last quarter of the first century BC, also of 26 specimens of the Latin series minted during Augustus' reign. Thanks to the FXR non destructive technique, a basic use of copper can be detected in the oldest coins, then a transition towards the use of bronze alloys as early as the second century BC and an evolution of those alloys with a predominant input either of thin or lead. Note that the peculiarities of a few series of divisional coins have been duly taken into account. The examination of the series of the Imperial era confirms the fact that oricalque was not used in Hispanic mints and that a kind of bronze was resorted to at Gades in which alongside copper, which served as basis, tin was generally prevalent
