Something very simple is at work at the source of scientific and technical thinking, very simple yet very profound, something felt as much as expressed-the mechanistic view of nature and of humankind as a part of nature. To understand a phenomenon, in this perspective, is to be able to imagine a mechanism whose action produces the phenomenon, or to be able, in some cases, even to construct the mechanism and have it produce that phenomenon (or its like) on command.
