In a recent article in this journal, Behm (1983) provided a simple quantitative method based upon mass analysis for distinguishing between in situ flintworking areas ("primary concentrations") and redeposited dumps ("secondary concentrations") of archaeological chipping debris. The criteria proposed for this identification are questioned in light of their implication for the interpretation of a lithic concentration from Death Valley National Monument
