The following description gives some relevant information o n how student enrollment in anthropol.ogy declined during the 70s in a flveyear university.and Indicates how one anthropology course which was adopted by the university lor inclusion in the general education curriculum category called "Foundations 01 Western Civllization" gives anthropology an excellent opportunity lor growth in the 80s.Although the details I provide may not suggest the existence 01 any general trends that can be used to predict the luture of academic anthropol.ogy.and while the facts may not be applicable in certain collegeluniversity contexts.I believe that because a large number 01 anthropology depart.ments may depend lor their survival on their courses being adopted lor general education re quirements.i t is necessary to evaluate the relationship 01 anthropology to the general education cur^ rlculum.My experience suggests that anlhropol ogy's involvement in the study 01 Western civiliza.lion can have positive results in establishing a new locus lor anthropology in the general education curriculum.Eleven years ago, the department of anthropol ogy on my campus had a very high student enroll ment, deriving partly lrom the teachlng of Introductory courses (Introduction to Physical Anlhro
