This paper describes the manufacture and function of several forms of grinding implements found in Late Paleolithic and Neolithic sites along the Nile. When the assemblages are compared, a trend toward sophistication and standardization is indicated by the Neolithic collections. The sheer quantity of grinding stones in this period reflects the increased importance of domesticated plants and communal grain processing activities are suggested
