In many European countries the use of quartzite in the absence of good quality flint during the Palaeolithic is well documented. But how are we to interpret the choice of non-flint raw materials, such as quartzite, as the dominant raw materials for lithic production in terms of the technological and social behaviour of Middle Pleistocene hominids? The Quartzite Palaeolithic of Germany serves as a regional case study for the exploration of the relationship between hominids and their choice of lithic raw materials. The important issue of preference (choice) versus necessity (local geology) in terms of Middle Palaeolithic raw material use and hominid mobility is discussed using a model of lithic production and a network approach. This results in a new interpretation of Late Middle Pleistocene hominid behaviour with respect to mobility and lithic raw material procurement
