Historical research on environmental issues has a long tradition within Geography. This tradition has been recently revitalized through debates on environment deterioration, natural resources and potentiation of risks. In recent decades these debates were accompanied by developments within Environmental History, a related fi eld in terms of concerns and approaches.Within this framework, this article examines the main contributions on key environmental issues in historical perspective, more precisely, in terms of topics, theoretical and conceptual perspectives and methodological strategies made by both areas (in the case of Historical Geography, in its earlier tradition and in its renovations carried out since the early '80s).The examination focuses on a number of authors and emblematic academic texts produced in United States, Western Europe and Latin America
