A MONG the two hundred references included in this review, thirteen analytical and critical reviews (each with a bibliography) of attitude or opinion studies, and two bibliographies were found. Three of the reviews are general in nature and ten are specialized. Reviews of methods for measuring attitudes are offered by Murphy-Murphy-Newcomb (I2i) with iS2 references in the chapter on attitudes (additional references in the general bibliography), and by Albig (2) with I27 references; while methods applicable to all characteristics of personality are presented by Allport (3). Hildreth's (8o) bibliography includes i29 references to attitude tests. The specialized summaries include reviews of opinion polls, namely, a general review by Katz and Cantril (88), the American Institute of Public Opinion-surveys during the years of I935-38 by Gallup and Robinson (56), and during I938-39 by the editors of the Public Opinion Quarterly (i65); the student Opinion Surveys of America with headquarters at the University of Texas by Belden (ii), and surveys of farmer opinion conducted by the Successful Farming monthly and described in the first of a series of reports by Fox (55). Among the specialized reviews belong those referring to types of attitude tests. Bogardus (I4) offers a brief history and resume of the social distance test and its application with nine references. Ferguson (54) in a critical review of 45 references discusses the requirements of an adequate attitude scale. Studies relative to types of attitudes and other problems are summarized or referred to bibliographically by five authors. Twenty-eight studies of attitudes toward marriage and sex are cited by Newcomb (I27). Richardson (130), in her review of studies of mental resemblance between husbands and wives and between friends, includes i2 references to attitudes. Research dealing with the effect of attitudes toward children on their adjustment is summarized, with 9 references, by Witmer (i95). The psychological effect of unemployment reported in 112 studies, the majority of which fall within the domain of attitudes, are reviewed by Eisenberg and Lazarsfeld (47). Finally, Olcott's (13) bibliography includes 58 annotated references on rural, but for the most part farmers', attitudes and opinions. The present review will be limited in several respects. While the above reviews do not refer to any specific period of time, the bibliography in this review will be confined to studies reported during I937-39 inclusive. Studies having no bearing on methodology, those published in non-English periodicals, and those found in unaccessible theses, papers, and reports will be omit
