T HIS is a preliminary research report on certain social and psychological factors involved in the development and modification of ethnic attitudes' among undergraduate students at a metropolitan university. The students in our sample are, we have reason to believe, typical of American undergraduates in that they are caught in a struggle of opposing ethnic ideologies. At home they encounter a relatively prejudiced attitude toward ethnic outgroups, while at college they find a relatively tolerant attitude. Our students are, however, atypical in the magnitude of their attitude change in the equalitarian direction and in the fact that most of them are themselves members of disprivileged ethnic minorities. In this paper we shall confine ourselves to a discussion of the Jewish students and parents in our sample and to observations made upon them by means of a questionnaire and the Rorschach test
