D URING I949 we were engaged in the study of the social life of a biracially structured modern community, Georgia Town. Among other problems, we set for ourselves the task of securing data which might serve as independent measures of validity of the Index of Status Characteristics (I.S.C.) developed by W. Lloyd Warner and his research associates at the University of Chicago.' We began with the assumption that the I.S.C. has validity as a measure of social status, in that it distinguishes clearly the various social levels within a community. In addition to selecting a contemporary community as a laboratory for testing our assumption, we wanted to view its status structure comparatively; that is, we thought it significant to compare the social organization of a Georgia Town through the employment of the I.S.C., with those of Yankee City,2 Jonesville,3 Old City,4 and the All-Negro Society of Oklahoma.5
