I disagree with Sarton that the most ominous conflict of our time is difference of opinion about outlook between men of letters, historians, philosophers and so-called humanists on one side and scientists on other. I am of opinion that arti¬ ficial dichotomy of two cultures, while it identifies polarities of sorts, misses larger polarizations within broad scope of and within broad realm of classics and humanities. Certainly there are many cultured scientists. The study of as a cultural pursuit is every bit as legitimate as a pursuit of history as history, in humane letters. Too many forget that while history of classics and humanities is history of classics and humanities, history of is itself. This idea Herbert Dingle has embellished elegantly. Sarton details various ways in which East and West have intermingled. He shows how and where civilization has arisen, flourished, and sometimes fallen, and development of a new humanism in as problems of today. If, as he says, science is conscience of mankind, a true of understanding must improve chances of our society's surviving that we may enjoy magnificent fruits of a culture which, while it depends on for energy, for transport, and for an understanding of health and disease, depends on humanism for an understanding of man and for an appreciation of our rich heritage which to¬ gether may lead to understanding out of which comes wisdom.
