The present experiments were designed to examine the effect of stimulus content on logical performance in a reasoning task. In particular, the selection task was used to elicit preferences for various logical (falsification) and illogical (matching and verification) problem-solving strategies. Earlier reports of the facilitating effect of thematic material on the tendency to reason logically were not supported: nor were previous reports that matching is the most common determinant of behaviour. Matching is only in evidence when the stimulus material is low in thematic content (Expt 1), and is replaced by verification when the stimulus material is high in thematic content (Expt 2
